Meredith Hockaday, 32, said she was walking her dog in Lighthouse Point, Fla., August 7 when she saw a strange light in the sky. Initially, she thought a plane had exploded, and began taking pictures and video. And then she noticed a strange cloud. At that point, she said, she considered the possibility that it was a UFO, and called her husband “freaking out.” But he could not explain the site either.

“I would like to say it’s a UFO, but I can’t say for sure,” said Hockaday.  ”I would like to think they exist, it makes for interesting talk. I believe there is other life out there.”

Peter Davenport, the director of the National UFO Reporting Center, said the center received 14 reports from Florida on August 7, both written and through the telephone.

But according to scientists, the object was a false alarm–it was merely exhaust fumes from a recent rocket launch that had formed crystallized clouds.

The Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launched a Delta IV rocket carrying a satellite from their space launch complex on August 7.

“Did you see the bright clouds following tonight’s Delta IV rocket launch?,” The U.S. National Weather Service in Melbourne, Fla., wrote on its Facebook page.  “We believe they are a form of “noctilucent clouds” that are sometimes present in the mesosphere at a height of 240,000 to 280,000 feet! Since the sun was still shining at that height, the ice crystals that formed in the rocket’s exhaust appeared quite bright.”

Davenport said one of the callers, who was very familiar with rocket launches, had seen something right after the launch with which she was unfamiliar and “had no explanation,” leaving open the possibility that something could have been in the sky in addition to the clouds formed by exhaust fumes.

The first sightings were reported to occur on March 19, 2003 when unexplained lights were observed near Kirkuk by civilians and paramilitary forces. March 19, 2003 also coincides with the invasion of Iraq by United States and the Coalition forces, marking the beginning of the Iraq War. Many witnesses claimed to have seen actual flying objects. Other witnesses claimed they could identify the objects as flaming debris from air strikes, airplanes, or lightning. As of March 19, 2003, any explanation of the strange lights remained unknown.

Another UFO was sighted in Kirkuk on March 23, 2003 when BBC News was making a report on the Iraq war situation when one of the reporters saw a triangular shaped UFO which was briefly filmed. The object flew by for a brief second before disappearing. There was no evidence that the UFO was a fighter jet or a cargo plane. On April 3, 2003 a UFO was photographed flying over Baghdad, the craft was not seen by any of the civilians or soldiers (except the photographer) and its unclear of what the object really was.

On April 6, 2003 five cylindrical shaped UFOs were sighted near the Tigris River and that the objects were filmed and televised live on Fox News although there’s no evidence that Fox News itself actually filmed the objects.

Theories and explanations about Iraq sightings

Numerous theories arose during the Iraq UFO sightings. Some Iraqi civilians believed that the UFOs were sent by God to protect holy and religious sites. Others claimed the craft was from outer space. However skeptics refute this claim, saying that the UFOs were either UAVs — Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, debris from explosions, planets or hoaxes.

Rumors of an Iraq base

Many UFO groups suggest that Saddam Hussein had an Area 51-like base somewhere in Iraq. According to these groups, they believe, the base housed a UFO that crashed either during the Gulf War in 1991 or Operation Desert Fox in 1998. However there is little evidence that such a base exists or that the UFO crash even happened.

Disputed photographs

One of the disputed photos was the alleged photo of a UFO taken while one of the statues of Saddam Hussein was being torn down. According to the source the photo depicts a dark, rectangular-shaped object. However, it is unclear if this is a UFO or a piece of debris that fell off when the statue was demolished.

The work was first printed by the Venetian humanist, Aldus Manutius, in 1508, after a manuscript belonging to Jodocus of Verona (now lost). Of great importance was the edition by the Basle Humanist Conrad Lycosthenes (1552), trying to reconstruct lost parts and illustrating the text with wood-cuts. Later editions were printed by F. Oudendorp (Leyde, 1720) and O. Jahn (1853, with the periochae of Livy).

An aspect of Obsequens’ work that has inspired much interest in some circles is that references are made to things moving through the sky. These have been interpreted as reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), but may just as well describe meteors, and, since Obsequens, probably, writes in the 4th century, that is, some 400 years after the events he describes, they hardly qualify as eye-witness accounts. For the year 100 BC, for example, Obsequens writes:
«Fax ardens Tarquiniis late visa subito lapsu cadens. Sub occasu solis orbis clipei similis ab occidente ad orientem visus perferri.»

«When C. Murius and L. Valerius were consuls, in Tarquinia towards sunset, a round object, like a globe, a round or circular shield, took its path in the sky from west to east.»

For the year 91 BC, he reports that:

«At Aenariae, while Livius Troso was promulgating the laws at the beginning of the Italian war, at sunrise, there came a terrific noise in the sky, and a globe of fire appeared burning in the north. In the territory of Spoletum, a globe of fire, of golden color, fell to the earth gyrating. It then seemed to increase in size, rose from the earth and ascended into the sky, where it obscured the sun with its brilliance. It revolved toward the eastern quadrant of the sky.»

Finally, Obsequens provided another example of this phenomenon for the year 42 BC, stating simply that:

«something like a sort of weapon, or missile, rose with a great noise from the earth and soared into the sky.»

1982

At night of summer 1982 in Isfahan, a large reflection of an object (UFO) was seen by thousands of people in the sky.

2003

In August 2003, two tourists saw a couple of yellow-white colored UFOs near the Caspian Sea.

2004

In April, of 2004, a mass UFO sighting (known as the 2004 Iran UFO sighting) occurred between April 12–21. The UFO’s were sighted by thousands of people and one was filmed by Iranian TV. It is unclear if the objects sighted were UFOs or if they were surveillance aircraft or the planet Venus. Many photos of UFOs in Iran surfaced shortly during the UFO sighting. Many of the photos were deemed unknown by some UFO groups but written off as either hoaxes, conventional aircraft or the planet Venus.

2005

A tourist said that he saw a UFO hovering near the Tomb of Cyrus the Great.

Eyewitnesses told the Fars News Agency (FNA) that a radiant UFO had crashed in the Barez Mounts of Kerman on Wednesday morning. Abulghassem Nasrollahi, the Deputy General of the Kerman province in Iran told the news agency that all the aircraft in the area had been accounted for, but did not rule out the possibility that the object could be a meteor. Another source also told the FNA that the object was on fire with thick smoke coming from it, and claimed that this implied the object was not a meteor. However, meteors appear as bright fireballs in the sky, as they are heated to high temperatures due largely to ram pressure as they fall at high speeds through the Earth’s atmosphere. Meteors often burn up completely before reaching the ground and some leave a smoke-like trail in their wake. Abulghassem noted that a few days earlier, in Rafsanjan, a similar incident was reported by witnesses.

August 17, a UFO was spotted and recorded hovering over Nanjing, China.

2010

July 7: An Unidentified Flying Object was spotted above Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport near Hangzhou, China. The airport was closed down due to the sighting().

July 15: UFO sighting took place in Chongqing in eastern China; several witnesses stated they saw the same thing: «four lantern-like objects forming a diamond shape that hovered over the city’s Shaping Park for over an hour().

October 6:UFO sighting took place near the inner Mongolian airport in China. Airport in inner Mongolia was reportedly shut down because of UFO sightings. According to witnesses, it appeared to have disappeared in a bright light. Though experts say, that it was a military aircraft test().

1990-03-30

Mass sighting of large, silent, low-flying black triangles in Ans, Wallonia, which were tracked by multiple NATO radar and jet interceptors, and investigated by Belgium’s military. Photographic evidence exists. One close encounter was reported.
